Luscious Jackson – Fever In Fever Out

With the success of their first two albums, this sharp New York girl band can now afford to call in the big shots. For their third album they have Daniel Lanois producing with typical understated intensity, along with contributions from Emmylou Harris and former Brand New Heavy vocalist N’Dea Davenport. While LJ’s last offering, Natural Ingredients, was very much the sound of New York colliding, this collection of trippy swing is more transcendent, less aggressive than earlier material. Harris’s harmonies on Soothe Yourself, for instance, provide a warm, rich counterpoint to the hip hop beat, while the trancey groove of Take A Ride perfectly captures the ’90s psychedelic zeitgeist. This is LJ at their most seamless, high and rising. ****
